Description

Raydan means the mountain elevation or the part protruding from it. Huwwat Raydan is a natural site and a unique vertical geological rocky component. It is more than 70 meters deep and its crater’s diameter is 40 meters. It is circular and is surrounded by a rocky flat surface on the southern side of the crater, in addition to trees and various plants. The bottom of the sinkhole can be clearly seen from the top and from all directions. The sinkhole contains a big cave on the north side of the bottom where rainwater gathers in a small lake inside the cave. It is said that a farmer from Bani Aajlin Arab tribe that was residing in Baakline, was farming on the edge of the upper sinkhole, so the bull slipped and took the farming tools and the farmer down with it. The farmer was named Raydan and they both fell to the bottom so the sinkhole was named after him: Huwwat Raydan (Raydan’s sinkhole).
